Blackdown Hills Artisans' Trail

Invitation to meet Blackdown Hills Artisans

Saturday & Sunday, 7th & 8th May 2011

There is a wealth of creative talent tucked away in the Blackdown Hills making almost anything from bread to ceramics from salami to sculptures from cider to socks and from furniture to fish pâté – and many of these artisans are amongst the Blackdown Hills Business Association’s 300+ members.

You are invited to visit local Blackdown Hills Artisans on Saturday and Sunday, 7th and 8th May. Our local artisans will open their doors to you from 10am to 4pm on both days.

We have 20 businesses opening their workshops and studios as part of the launch of the Blackdown Hills Artisans which will take place during the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, 7th and 8th May.

Come and see them at work; sample their produce; quiz them; admire their talent and skill; try your hand at some of the activities; even buy from them!

We know you will be amazed at what you discover tucked away in the Blackdown Hills – just follow the signs!

Open weekend activity will offer visitors a unique experience:

Gill Campbell Master Saddler will start with a 1/2 butt of leather and she will be making a bridle over the weekend. So depending on when you arrive, you will see the various stages of production. The sequence is:

1) Cut

2) Edge, stain and polish and crease

3) Punch crew holes and make turns

4) Stitch mark and skive

5) Punch round holes

6) Stitch

7) Polish and finish

Gill will also have some samples ready for people to have ago at stitching!

Visitors to David Ball Furniture Restoration will be able to see fully restored antique furniture for sale, un-restored pieces in the "waiting room" for restoration and sale, and a selection of items in mid-restoration including an Edwardian cane-seat corner chair, a Victorian rush-seat child's chair, a set of four Arts & Crafts style upholstered dining chairs and a Georgian mahogany bureau.

David's wife, daughters and grandchildren will also be on hand to refresh you with hot and cold drinks, cakes and biscuits throughout the weekend and all proceeds will go to the British Legion's 90th Anniversary Poppy Appeal Pedal to Paris - David has signed up to raise at least £800 by completing the cycle ride from London to Paris in September!

New Leaflet - Blackdown Hills Artisans

We have just published a leaflet which includes 36 Blackdown Hills Artisans. You can also visit the Blackdown Hills Directory at

www.blackdown-hills.co.uk.

Artisans, by their very nature, are usually hard at work behind closed doors producing, creating, making and restoring or taking part in shows and events and are not always available. However, they would be delighted to hear from you - to make an appointment to view, purchase or to discuss a commission.

Thanks

With special thanks to the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Sustainable Development Fund, SPS Marketing and Otter Brewery for their generous sponsorship of this initiative.

A unique experience for all the family
